Organic Seeds Basics

You know your soil is "clean", that your soil is not contaminated in any way because you got your soil tested, so now you’re looking for some organic seeds to plant. At this point you are probably asking yourself, "How do I know that the seeds I am buying are organically grown and where is the best place to buy my seeds?" Well, you can wait till the last minute and chance buying your seeds at your nursery or such places as Canadian Tire or Home Hardware. However, your best bet is to plan ahead and order via seed catalogs so that you can identify whether the company's seeds are organically grown. When looking for companies, look for those who have labels for the seeds which they grow and sell. Those who grow and sell organic seeds will use one or more of these labels: U for untreated, O for organic, OP for open-pollinated, and H for heritage. Winter gardening is a great way to add a little spring cheer to the long cold months. Starting a winter garden is usually carried out before the first frost hits. There are a number of flowers that will bloom during the cold and harsh months. When choosing which flower seeds you will purchase, it is important to know which flowers will bloom in rough weather conditions such as extreme cold. The following are the different kinds of flower seeds that will bloom in the winter: Flower Bulbs: If you are partial to flower bulbs, there are a number of different bulbs that will bloom in the winter. Various bulbs include: Snowdrops, Snow Crocus, Daffodils, Cyclamen, and Hyacinth. There are also spring blooming bulbs such as Tulips can be made to bloom during the dark and cold months. |
Start Your Plants From Seeds

Propagating your own plants from seeds is much more rewarding and less expensive than buying seedlings from the garden supply shop. One of the first things you will need is a box or tray approximately 7.5cm to 10cm deep, 30cm to 35cm inches wide, and 50cm to 60cm long. Once you have your planting box, fill it with a suitable seed raising mix. A good medium would be 80-85% washed river sand and 15-20% peat moss. If you prefer to buy a bag of seed raising mix, visit your local garden supply store. One you have your medium, fill the box almost to the top, and then pat down the medium firmly. Prepare the medium for planting your seeds by making rows across the box. They should be 1cm to 1.5cm deep and 5cm apart. Plan Your Vegetable Garden From Seeds

Then you have to further divide the area and decide how much space each vegetable can have. Select your veg seeds based on how much space each species or indeed variety need to grow.
